Heading 2 How Crommelins Helped Coates deliver a smarter Custom Plate Compactor Solution for utes 1

Project Background

Coates, one of Australia’s most recognised names in equipment hire and specialist solutions, identified an opportunity to improve transport and handling efficiency across its light compaction fleet. While the existing machines were functional, their long crossover handlebars made stowage in canopied trade utes challenging and reduced mobility on site. For a national hire fleet servicing high-demand environments, a more compact, operator-friendly design was needed.

To address this, Coates turned to Crommelins Machinery for a reliable solution that could be rolled out across the fleet without compromising on performance or durability.

The Problem

Coates sought a light compactor solution that would:

  • Fit easily into enclosed trade utes with minimal height clearance
  • Improve on-site mobility for operators working in tight access areas
  • Deliver the same compaction power customers expect, in a smaller footprint
  • Help standardise usability and reduce transport risk across the national fleet

The requirement called for a redesign, rather than a simple retrofit.

The Solution

Working in partnership with Coates, Crommelins reengineered a solution around the proven CC70RP Plate Compactor.

The original long-handle design was removed and replaced with a new integrated roll frame, which now serves two critical functions:

  • Protection for the engine and components during transit
  • Fold-down handles to reduce overall machine height

To further increase usability on-site, Crommelins also added a heavy-duty retractable wheel kit. This simple addition allowed operators to move the compactor without lifting or dragging, reducing fatigue and minimising the risk of damage.

By rethinking the platform rather than compromising with add-ons, Crommelins delivered a version of the CC70RP that now meets Coates’ national fleet spec.

The Results

The result is a fit-for-purpose compactor tailored to the realities of modern ute-based service delivery:

  • Lower profile, helping to enable easier stowage in canopied vehicles
  • Designed to support OH&S best practices through reduced manual handling
  • Helps increased uptime due to robust frame protection
  • Better on-site manoeuvrability thanks to integrated wheels

Following testing and internal feedback, the upgraded model is now Coates’ national standard for their light compaction fleet.  This initiative reflects Coates’ commitment to improving safety, efficiency and fleet usability for its customers.

Why It Worked

Crommelins took the time to understand the realities of how these machines were being used, and more importantly, where they were being stored. Instead of tweaking the existing model, they reimagined it for transport, handling, and servicing in a real-world hire environment. Coates’ clear specifications and focus on operator safety guided the engineering, helping to ensure the solution aligned with its requirements for fleet standardisation and improved efficiency.

That focus on practicality is a hallmark of Crommelins’ product development process. Backed by more than 65 years of supplying equipment to Australia’s hire and construction industries, they don’t just supply engines, they build machines for the conditions and the people using them.

Lessons for Other Hire Providers

If your fleet is designed around tradie utes or needs to operate within vehicle height and access constraints, handle design is not a small detail. And if your customers and team are constantly lifting or shifting gear, even small upgrades in mobility can make a difference.

Crommelins works with hire and trade businesses to tailor proven platforms to real-world conditions. If you’re looking to streamline your fleet setup without compromising on power or reliability, they can help you build a solution that fits, literally.
