Heading 4 How Crommelins Delivered a Custom Control Panel Fitout for Geelong Coastal Hire’s Inverter Generator Fleet 1

Project Background

Geelong Coastal Hire, a growing equipment hire provider in Victoria, required a generator that could handle on-site electrical safety, weatherproofing and portability, without compromising ease of use or reliability.

They had chosen the 7kW Cromtech TG7000IA Inverter Generator as their base platform, but needed several key changes to meet both hire use expectations and site compliance. The factory model included a push-button starter and standard outlets, fine for general use, but not for commercial sites requiring IP66-rated outlets, lockable ignition, and a lifting point for easy handling.

Crommelins was approached to deliver a generator fitout that combined compliance, durability, and custom specification, and could be rolled out across their fleet.

The Problem

Geelong Coastal Hire needed to upgrade the TG7000IA from standard configuration to a more rugged, site-ready unit with:

  • Three 15amp IP66 weatherproof outlets, each protected with breakers
  • RCD breaker integration for electrical safety compliance
  • A change from push-button start to a keyed ignition to deter tampering and improve fleet control
  • A lifting point, allowing the unit to be craned or hoisted easily on-site

They wanted a tailored solution that looked clean, worked reliably, and would standardise future fleet units.

The Solution

Crommelins responded with a fully custom control panel and hardware modification package, purpose-built for the TG7000IA.

Key deliverables included:

  • Complete removal of the OEM control panel
  • A new laser-cut outlet panel, designed in-house to suit the custom electrical layout
  • Installation of 3x 15amp IP66 weatherproof outlets, including the specific brand and model requested by the customer
  • RCD protection integrated into the outlet layout, ensuring site-ready compliance
  • Conversion to a keyed start ignition system, giving operators secure control and consistent starting
  • Installation of a fixed lifting point for safe on-site handling and vehicle loading

This solution not only improved compliance and handling, it elevated the generator to full hire spec with tailored reliability.

The Results

The upgraded TG7000IA units now deliver:

  • Site-compliant power outlets with robust weather protection
  • Integrated safety switching, thanks to built-in RCDs and breakers
  • Keyed operation, improving accountability and reducing the risk of tampering
  • Safe, secure lifting, with a dedicated lift point on each unit
  • Professional finish, suitable for commercial customers and repeat hires

Geelong Coastal Hire were very satisfied with the first delivery and are now planning additional orders to build out their fleet.

Why It Worked

This project worked because Crommelins focused on more than just meeting the spec, we built a fit-for-purpose solution around how these generators are actually used.

By replacing the control panel entirely, we were able to deliver a clean, engineered layout using the customer’s preferred hardware, not just a workaround. The result is a safer, more compliant, and more durable generator built to withstand real-world site conditions.

Lessons for Other Hire Businesses

If you’re buying inverter generators for hire, the standard factory outlet setup won’t always cut it. Electrical compliance, safe handling and hardware durability are now standard expectations on many job sites.

Crommelins can customise power equipment to your spec, whether that’s outlet layout, RCD protection, ignition style or handling options. We don’t just modify equipment. We design it for the way your fleet needs to work.
